“Aidan, are you sure it’s this way?”

“Pretty sure. Come on, the day’s getting shorter the longer you stand there.”

Aidan led you through the winding streets until you came upon a small shop, flowering desert plants in planter boxes underneath the windows. Stepping inside, you were greeted by racks and shelves of vintage clothing.  Not the remakes either; the real deal, which was quite rare these days. In another corner of the store, overlooking the street, was a small café, serving beverages and snacks. You twirled around, taking in the sights, sounds and scents.

“Oh my God, Aidan, how did you know about this place?!” You exclaimed, surprised it even existed.

He rubbed sheepishly at the back of his head. “Actually, I didn’t. I called one of my crew about this, because to be honest, I had no idea of where to go, whatsoever. He’s a real Ladies’ man, so I figured he’d know where to go.” Aidan explained; but by this time, you were already searching through the clothing feverishly.

Aidan chuckled at you looking at everything, placing it against your body and looking at it in the mirror, wondering if you should get it. “I really do owe Spy for this…” He mumbled under his breath, as he followed you around to the different racks of clothing.

After a while of shopping, and two shopping bags of clothes being (kindly) carried by Aidan, you decided to go to the café in the store. The lady at the counter looked up at the two new arrivals. “Ah, a table for the young couple? Just over there.” She pointed at a table next to a window.

Aidan was slightly taken aback at her words. ‘Did she think we were a couple? Do we really look like that?’ He pondered. The lady’s assumption, however, had no effect on you, as you just continued browsing the menu. Sitting down across from you, Aidan did the same.

After placing your orders, you both basically twiddled you thumbs while waiting. Aidan, slightly annoyed by the silence, spoke up first. “(f/n), what would you consider this?”

You looked away from the window and back to Aidan. “Consider what?”

“This; what we’re doing. What is it to you? Friends spending time or what?”

You shrugged. “I guess, but it’s whatever you want it to be.”

“Does that mean you’d be okay, with, well, being something more?” Aidan asked, fidgeting slightly.

You raised an eyebrow slightly. “Aidan, what do you mean?”

“Like, more than just friends….”  He sighed. ‘I’m no good at this…’

You cocked your head to the side, (h/c) hair falling from your shoulders to hang freely.  “Are… Are you asking me out?”

He gave a light chuckle. “Well, yeah, but if you don’t want to, I, um, I understand…” His voice got quieter as he neared the end of his sentence, as his head hung slightly.

You placed your hand on his. “Aidan, if you are, I say yes.”

He perked up at your words, his chocolate brown eyes searching your own (e/c) ones. “Are… You’re not joking, are you?”

You gave him a small smile. “Why would I joke about something like this?”

His expression brightened instantly, a smile breaking out on his face, crinkling the scars that ran along his right jaw. By now, the lady running the café brought over your orders, placing them in front of you both. Both of you smiling, you chatted as you ate your food.

When you left, your hands were tangled together. As Aidan walked you back to your apartment, you couldn’t help but feel as though you were being watched. But you didn’t care, as Aidan gave you a hug before you entered your apartment building and he left to his place.

Up on a nearby roof top, someone lowered their binoculars, a half-smile gracing their masked features. “I knew zhe Pyro could get zhe girl; he should stop doubting himself.” The RED Spy mumbled, before standing up and heading back to the Team Fortress Compound.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You adjusted your shorts, as today was going to be quite hot and humid. It’s been almost another year, this time since you started dating Aidan, and the relationship was still going strong. You picked up the small envelope on the counter, slipping it inside your purse before heading to the Team Fortress Compound. Both teams, RED and BLU, were putting on a show today, as it was the anniversary of the day Team Fortress was founded.
Aidan was able to get you a VIP floor ticket; how, you do not know. Unfortunately, he couldn’t attended alongside you, as apparently, it collided with his schedule, but he told you to go ahead and have fun.
Taking the hover-bus, you made your way to the far end of the city, where the compound was located. It’s very rare outsiders are allowed in the arena; most often, the games are broadcasted, or watched from stadium-side seats. When you came to the VIP gates, a worker stopped you to check your ticket. Once he made sure it was valid, he waved you in onto the floor of the arena.
As you found the spot that Aidan was told you to go to, you realized what a view it had of the stage where the teams would be. You were right next to the stage. You glanced at the holo-screen of your phone, realizing you had a while to wait. Dozens of people were milling in the stands around the arena, and only a few on the floor with you. So, to kill time until the event started, you played a game on your phone.
Finally, after a while of waiting and a lot of buildings reduced to rubble (in game, of course), the event opened. The first team on was BLU, all on at once, doing their own little thing. The best, in your mind, was the Scout, who was breakdancing, and rather well at that.
The RED team’s entrance, however, was much more memorable. Each member did a demonstration with their preferred weapon, but with a twist.
Scout was knocking signed baseballs into the stands for people to catch, while the Engineer had a turret shoot out small trinkets.
Medic shot a barrage of syringes (without needles), with tickets to the next Team Fortress match, so people could attend the games in the stands which hovered next to the Arena.
The Demoman’s grenades exploded high above the crowd, confetti raining down.
Heavy had (somehow) modified his gun to launch his favourite sandwiches to the hungry crowd.
Sniper was skeet shooting, but the clay disks would drop some souvenir coins down when shot.
The Soldier was launching plush animals to the kids who had attended, even though you had no idea why they were here.
Spy just blew kisses, being the (figurative) lady-killer he was.
However, when the rest of the team stood to one side, the Pyro and Spy took center stage. The RED Pyro stepped forwards, hefting its flamethrower so its nozzle pointed up. Pulling the ignition trigger, a large burst of flame erupted sky-wards. After letting the fire blaze for a short while, it released the trigger, ending the flow of fuel and cutting off the flame.
Somehow, the Spy had gotten a hold of a mini-mic, and cleared his throat. “Les dames et messieurs, zhe Pyro wishes for me to say zhat it iz about to do somezhing zhat no member of Team Fortress haz ever done. Pyro, if you will.”
The Pyro walked towards the side of the stage, and stopped right in front of your seat. Placing its weapon on the ground next to it, it crouched down and extended a gloved hand to you. Confused, but curious, you grasped the masked being’s hand, and felt it pull you up on stage. Gripping its hand, you allowed the Pyro to lead you to the center of the stage. Once there, it dropped you hand, and placed its weapon back down. (Spy refused to hold it, mumbling about it being too dangerous.)
Reaching up with its gloved hands, the Pyro began to loosen the clasps on its mask.
Everyone in the crowd, as well as the two teams, were staring at the RED Pyro. After a few moments of fumbling with the ties, a small, rubbery, pop was heard. Pulling the mask off, the Pyro’s revealed face broke into a smile.
“Hey there, (f/n).”
You couldn’t believe your eyes. “Ai… Aidan?”
Your long-time boyfriend nodded. “It’s me. But, on to what I wanted to do.” Pulling a small box out of his belt pouch, he knelt down in front of you.
Opening the box to reveal a ring, Aidan looked up into your (e/c) orbs. “(f/n), will you do me the honour of becoming my wife? No one has ever brought more light into my world than you, and I want that light to stay.”
Eyes wide, you couldn’t speak. To show your answer, you flung your arms around his neck and planted a kiss on his lips, smiling. When you pulled back from the hug, Aidan took the ring out of the small jewellery box and slipping it on your ring finger. Splaying your fingers, you took a moment to appreciate the gemstone. A reddish-orange gem, cut to look the Pyro’s emblem, was set in the gold band around your finger. Inside the stone itself, it appeared as though a flame was trapped, flickering away.
Standing up to the cheering of the crowd, Aidan placed his flamethrower in a holster across his back. Picking you up, he sprinted off the stage and away from everyone. After reaching the RED Team’s dormitory wing, he placed you back on the ground and gripped your hand, leading you to his room. Stripping his suit off, Aidan was left wearing a pair of old jeans. Quickly, he pulled a t-shirt over his head before you could see the extent of his scars. (But not before seeing his, ahem, well-toned chest.)
Sitting down on the edge of his bed, he patted the spot next to him, indicating you should sit there. Once you sat down, he wrapped his arms around you and pulled you close. “So, why did you never tell me about your job, Aidan?”
“Well, I wasn’t sure how you would react, and if you were going, well, like me, I wanted you to like me for who I am, not what I do. The others find a lot of girls care more about them being in Team Fortress then what they’re actually like. But now you know.”
You flipped around in his arms to face him “Aidan, for all I care, you could work in any job and I’d still love you.” Aidan smiled and nuzzled your head, as a knock sounded at the door. Sighing, Aidan lifted his head up. “Come in.”
The door creaked open, and the faces of the Scout, Medic and Spy looked in. “Hey, um, Py, we just wanted to congratulate you, like, on your proposal, ya know? It was… It was unique.” Scout said, stepping in cautiously.
Even though the Pyro had been unmasked, they were still treading lightly around their teammate. Medic nodded. “Ve wish you vell in your marriage. Any ideas vhere it vill be?”
The expression on Aidan’s face, oh, how you wish you could describe it. “Um, actually no. Spy… Spy… Spy, can you help me? I don’t know what to do now…”
The Frenchman gave a short laugh, after taking a drag on his cigarette. “I will, mon amie, but first, you better change what room you are in. After all, if you’re going have a wife here, you are going to need zhe space, for zhe clothes and ze child. Perhaps zhe children, who knows?”
Aidan paled at the thought of more than one child, while you just smiled. The RED Demoman walked in, his bottle of scrumpy held in one hand. “Aye, got zome news fer ya two lovebirds. The ol’ Engie’s found a room for ya both, e’s just gotta clean it up and fix it a bit.” With that, the Scotsman left, taking a swig out of his bottle, while everyone stood in silence.
“Well, how ‘bout that for timing?” The Scout asked, making everyone chuckle. After a few minutes of simple chat, Heavy came by the room. “Pyro, Engineer want to see you. Come.” Everyone filed after the Russian man, curious as to what the Engineer wanted.
Once you arrived, the RED Heavy stepped to the side to allow Aidan and you through. Stepping into an old storage room, a different sight greeted you; both the RED, and the BLU, Engineers working alongside each other, discussing plans.
Those who were part of the RED Team who had just arrived instantly tensed up, ready to fight. Having a member of the BLU so deep inside their home is usually bad news.
The BLU Engineer put his hands up, while his RED counterpart stepped forwards. “Guys, guys, hold yer horses. I got a ceasefire on so he can help me out with this. Bit too much work for one o’ me, don’t cha think?” The REDs in the room relaxed somewhat, but were still tense.
“Besides, this is the first time anyone from Team Fortress dated someone, let along getting’ hitched. So, us engineers figured we’d do somethin’ special, and you guys’s Spy did say you guys would probably need a whole lot more space. So, we’re fixin’ up this ol’ storage room.” The BLU Engineer said, helping to ease more of the tension.
The RED Engineer walked over to you, his wrench dangling from his hand. “So, miss (f/n), soon-to-be Mrs. (f/n), you got any preferences for the room?” You began to discuss the arrangement of the room with the Texan male, while the Scout ran off and brought back beer, as the Spy began to talk about marriage with your soon-to-be husband.
I still have no comment.
Apart from the fact Archer will show up (briefly) later on.
I do dislike Archer, but he is fun to write for.
